Normalmente un cavo fibra ottica quando si posiziona è sottoposto a piegamenti e curve.
Tutti i cavi supportano fino a un certo grado di curvatura (Bending Radius), ma soprattutto dentro gli armadi rack capita spesso che per ragioni di spazio si debbano piegare i cavi oltre questo limite, e i normali cavi fibra ottica sono molto sensibili ai piegamenti. Quando si piega un cavo in fibra, la luce nella parte esterna del nucleo non viene più riflessa verso il centro del nucleo ma si perde nella guaina causando una significativa perdita del segnale.
I cavi Bending Insensitive (anche bend insensitive fiber (BIF), bend improved, bend optimized o bend tolerant) sono progettati per continuare a trasmettere con perdite minime anche se sottoposti a piegamento grazie a uno strato aggiuntivo di materiale riflettente intorno al nucleo, che impedisce alla luce di disperdersi nella guaina.

Inspired to create a chair where the back and arms are moulded from a single piece of plywood, Hecht and Colin describe employing a process similar to that a tailor might use to cut a pattern in fabric. This approach resulted in the beautiful structure wherein the moulded back and arms component is supported by a simple A-frame wood dowel construction. One of the benefits of this design is an increase in comfort due to natural movement in the plywood back.
